This handsome, topographical map of Spain and Portugal is from Atlas de Géographie, De l'Isle's great atlas.
Guillaume de l'Isle (1675-1726) was son of a cartographer and a pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini, who among other important contributions, aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction, observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. De l'Isle carried on this exacting work with remarkable dedication and integrity, constantly revising and improving his maps. While precision was his primary goal, his maps are invariably elegant and attractive. He was probably the most influential mapmaker of the 18th century.

VISSCHER, Nicolaes (1649-1702)
Hispaniæ et Portugalliæ Regna
Amsterdam: Peter Schenck Junior, 1725. Copper engraving with stunning period colour. Printed on fine laid paper. In excellent condition. Image size (including text): 18 ¾ x 22 ½ inches. Sheet size: 22 ¼ x 26 inches.
An elegant map of Spain and Portugal by the celebrated cartographer Nicolaes Visscher.
For nearly a century the Visscher family dominated Amsterdam's map trade. Claez Jansz Visscher (1587-1652) founded the business at the beginning of the seventeenth century, establishing the firm near the workshop of the great Dutch publisher Pieter van der Keere. At this time he produced a few separately issued maps but his first major atlas was completely comprised of maps printed from van der Keere's old plates. The business was continued by Visscher's son and grandson, Nicholaes Visscher I (1618-1679) and Nicholaes Visscher II (1649-1702). During their lifetimes they issued a great quanity of atlases, which they consistently updated and revised with the latest cartographic discoveries. Elizabeth Visscher, the widow of Nicholaes II, continued the business after her husband's death and published both an Atlas Minor and an Atlas Major in several revised editions.
This is a very attractive and readable map of the Iberian Peninsula by Nicolaes Visscher. The cartouche shows the combined coat of arms representing one kingdom, as it was under Philip II (and his successors) until 1640, when Portugal broke away.
